Year 7 STEAM: Bee-yond the Hive

Can urban schools bridge the gap between students and nature—right in the middle of the city?

By 2050, nearly 70% of the world’s population will live in urban areas (UN). At the same time, climate change and resource scarcity are making food and water security urgent global challenges. Yet, many young people growing up in cities have little connection to where their food comes from—or how nature sustains life.

Our urban environments can be rich teachers as well, late last year the Redlands Year 7 cohort grappled with the existential threat facing bees due to the spread of varroa mite. Our own rooftop hives were the central focus of the STEAM Days, students asking the question as to whether cities can work with nature, not against it and whether technology has a role to play in safeguarding their future. We’re looking to deepen our students experiences through even greater integration of A.I.
