Redlands Year 8 Students Lead at Circular Economy Hotspot

Eight Redlands Year 8 students have shared their vision for a more sustainable future with government and industry leaders from across the Asia Pacific, delivering the opening keynote at the Asia Pacific Circular Economy Hotspot at UNSW on Thursday 1 October.

The students were selected to represent Redlands after their teams won the school’s Circular Challenge Showcase, which forms part of their Geography studies on the circular economy. Their success gave them the opportunity to present their ideas on an international stage, engaging with world leaders, United Nations representatives and local politicians, including NSW Premier Chris Minns.

Turning Classroom Learning into Real-World Action

At Redlands, learning extends beyond the classroom. Through the Year 8 Geography unit on the circular economy, students explore how resources can be used more efficiently, waste can be reduced and more sustainable solutions can be developed.

The Circular Challenge Showcase encouraged students to apply these principles by developing innovative responses to sustainability challenges. The eight students selected to attend the Hotspot demonstrated the quality of their work, earning the opportunity to share their ideas with an audience of government officials, industry representatives and sustainability experts.

Delivering the event’s opening keynote, the students confidently presented their vision for a more circular future, demonstrating the creativity, critical thinking and communication skills developed through their learning.

Showcasing Innovative Circular Economy Solutions

Following their keynote presentation, the students hosted a stall at the Asia Pacific Circular Economy Hotspot, where they showcased their circular economy solutions to event attendees.

The opportunity allowed them to engage directly with people working to advance sustainability across the region, demonstrating how young people can contribute practical ideas to some of today’s environmental challenges.

Their participation highlighted the value of student-led sustainability initiatives and the importance of giving students opportunities to apply their knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Building a More Sustainable Future Through Education

Redlands’ participation in the Asia Pacific Circular Economy Hotspot also reflects the school’s partnership with Circular Australia through the Circular Schools program.

This partnership supports students to explore circular economy principles and understand how their ideas can contribute to a more sustainable future. By connecting classroom learning with real-world challenges, students develop the knowledge, confidence and skills to think critically about the world around them and take an active role in shaping what comes next.

For our Year 8 Circular Champions, presenting at an international event was an opportunity to put their learning into action, share their ideas with influential decision-makers and demonstrate the potential of young people to lead positive change.

At Redlands, we encourage students to think creatively, challenge conventional approaches and turn their ideas into action. These students have shown what is possible when learning inspires innovation, confidence and a commitment to a better future.
