Means-tested Scholarships at Redlands exist because our community believes that curiosity, character and promise should never be limited by financial circumstances. By contributing to the Means-tested Scholarship Endowment, you are providing a lifechanging education to students who may never have had the opportunity. More than that, you are investing in a fund that grows every year, ensuring that equal access and opportunity remain deeply embedded in the future of Redlands – not just for today’s students, but for generations to come.
A Tradition of
Opening Doors
When former Principal Dr Peter Lennox established the Redlands Scholarship Endowment in 2010, he built upon a legacy that has shaped our School for more than a century. His vision was bold and future‑focused: to open doors for exceptional young people who would enrich our community and contribute meaningfully to the world, while ensuring that access to a Redlands education could be sustained for generations.
Although the Endowment formalised this commitment, Redlands’ belief in educational opportunity reaches back to its earliest days. The first official scholarships were awarded in 1921, beginning a long tradition of supporting students whose talent and potential outshone their circumstances.
Throughout the 1930s Depression, Redlands continued to stand with its students. Bursaries and waived fees enabled many young people facing financial hardship to remain at the School, surrounded by stability, care and the chance to thrive. During these years, Redlands also welcomed children experiencing profound adversity – including those orphaned during the Spanish Influenza epidemic and young people displaced by war in Europe – offering not just an education, but belonging and hope.
Means-tested scholarships open doors for students who might otherwise never experience a Redlands education. These opportunities enrich not only the lives of recipients but the entire School community - bringing diversity, inclusion and perspectives that prepare every Redlands student for a world beyond our gates.
Looking Forward
Today, the Scholarship Endowment continues to grow steadily and currently supports six scholarship students from Year 7 through to Year 11. Guided by Dr Lennox’s founding vision, our long‑term goal is clear and ambitious: to significantly grow the Endowment by 2036 so Redlands can support multiple means‑tested scholarships each year, in perpetuity.
The Impact
The impact of this commitment reaches far beyond individual students. Scholarship recipients bring diverse perspectives, experiences and strengths that enrich classroom learning, deepen community understanding and strengthen the cultural and social fabric of Redlands. Their success, at School and beyond, creates a powerful ripple effect, shaping families, influencing communities and inspiring future generations of Redlanders.
The Redlands Scholarship Endowment ensures we can continue to open doors, nurture potential and empower extraordinary young people to let their light shine – today, tomorrow and long into the future.
Selection Process
Over the last six years, Redlands has honoured esteemed members of our community by establishing means‑tested scholarships in their name. These include scholarships recognising Dr Peter Lennox (Principal 2008-2019), Belinda Oxley (Visual Arts teacher), Dr Sue Morey AM (Redlander 1959) and Coralie Amos OAM (Redlander 1964).
In our wide school catchment area, there are families and young people who are experiencing financial hardship that can often be invisible. Disadvantage takes many forms, and Redlands remains committed to providing equal opportunity as part of our dedication to diversity and inclusion across the School.
Our Means-tested Scholarships support students who demonstrate strong potential, personal character and community spirit, and whose families are experiencing genuine financial difficulty. Each year we receive many applications from exceptional students and the selection process is very comprehensive. Applicants sit the annual ACER examinations, complete an online application with supporting documentation, and short listed candidates are interviewed by the Principal. All financial information is thoroughly reviewed, treated confidentially and is used solely to verify demonstrated need. A range of factors is considered during the assessment process, with the final decision made by Principal Sean Corcoran.
While we receive many strong applications each year, we offer one Means-tested Scholarship annually which we promote to families who believe a Redlands education could make a meaningful difference in their lives.
