Following the opening of the Redlands Learning Hub in 2020, significant alumni were identified in order to acknowledge and celebrate their contribution in alignment with each of the respective faculties within the building.

Level 4: Social Sciences is named in honour of Aphra Scroder, Class of 1903, an early university graduate, teacher, parliamentary librarian and advocate of women’s education.

Aphra Scroder commenced at Redlands in the 1890s and graduated in 1903, in the very early era of the School, during the time of founders Miss Liggins and Miss Arnold. While at school, she was an outstanding academic and all-round contributor.

Aphra attended the University of Sydney, where she was president of the university’s Women-Undergraduate Association and the Women’s Christian Union. Upon graduation, she taught at the Killarney School, Mosman and was also acting principal. She taught at Redlands both before World War I and again in the 1920s, however had to resign due to ill health.

Aphra became a librarian at the State Library of NSW from 1921 and was appointed as a librarian at the Parliamentary Library, ACT, 1928–1931. She returned to teaching and became the inaugural Preparatory School head teacher at newly established Canberra Grammar School from 1931– 1934.
