The careers and lives of Redlands 10,000+ Alumni are diverse, intriguing and successful. Many of our past students achieve remarkable accomplishments through their chosen professions, and Redlands would like to pass on our congratulations to these individuals.

Penny Everingham, Redlander 1959

Penny’s extensive career (50 Years) includes many performances with Queensland Theatre Company including Once in a Royal David’s City, Pygmalion, The Crucible, The Importance of Being Ernest, Julius Caesar and many more. Penny directed Grimm Tales (USQ) and has written and performed puppetry for Queensland Marionette Theatre and Marionette Theatre of Australia. Her film and television credits include Hoges, Crocodile Dundee in LA, The Wilde Girls, Ring of Endless Light, The Real Macaw, Sunny Boy, Nim’s Island and episodes of Heartbeat, Jeopardy II, Kids, Medivac, Blithe Spirit and the Young Composer series. Penny was a member of the Board of QTC for 8 years and is currently on the board of Metro Arts.

Darryl Jaffray, Redlander 1958

Darryl left Redlands in 1958 to take up a full scholarship at the Royal Ballet School in London, where she then became a member of the Company for 8 years. In 1987, Darryl went on to become the Education Office for the Royal Ballet and then the Director of Education in 1999. She was responsible for the Royal Opera and the Orchestras of the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet. In 2006 Darryl was awarded an MBE for Services for Dance.

Rachael Beck, Redlander 1989

One of Australia’s most in-demand performers in musical theatre and television, Rachael has worked with such stars as Hugh Jackman and in hit shows including Cats, Singing In the Rain, Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, Hey Dad and The Flying Doctors. Rachael is also an Ambassador for the Australian Children’s Musical Foundation, a not for profit organisation that aims to provide musical instruments to children in disadvantaged, remote and Indigenous communities in Australia.

Jack Frerer, Redlander 2013

Jack is an Australian composer of music for concert, film and dance, as well as an instrumentalist, producer and filmmaker based in Manhattan, currently studying composition with Grammy and Academy award winning composer John Corigliano at The Juilliard School with the Adrian Weller Scholarship and the Steuermann Memorial Prize. Jack has written pieces and arrangements for a variety of ensembles and performers, and has had works performed around Australia, Europe and the US. In 2016, his trio Last In, First Out was given both first prize and the audience prize in the Alba Rosa Viëtor Composition Competition in Utrecht, was a winner of the Indiana State University Music Now competition, and was third prize winner of the Belvedere Festival composition competition. In 2014 Jack won the inaugural Matt Withers Young Australian Music Composition Competition open to all Australian music majors under 30, became the youngest ever finalist in APRA and Tropfest’s Tropscore, and was one of three Australian composers selected to partake in the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic’s Emerging Composers Workshop. Jack has also been an ASCAP Morton Gould Award finalist.

Elliott Wheeler, Redlander 1995

Composer, producer and Turning Studios founder Elliott Wheeler excels at the pressurized heights where contemporary music and film fuse.  He’s as adept at bringing diverse artists – from Nas to Bryan Ferry – into synch with the complex demands of music-driven visual tours de force, as he is working on period needle drops and mixes, or composing traditional dramatic scores. His collaborations in these adventures crossed many musical boundaries, from Nas, Jay Z, Grandmaster Flash, Rahiem from the Furious Five, Bryan Ferry, Florence + the Machine, Sia, Dianne Warren, Chris Isaac, Kacey Musgroves, Stevie Nicks, Emile Haynie, will.i.am, Mike Dean, Nile Rogers, Christina Aquilera, members of the Dapkings, Emily Warren, Chris Isaac, Kacey Musgroves, Stevie Nicks, Duncan Sheik, and many more. Now based Australia and US, Wheeler is in high demand as a screen composer and producer across a broad spectrum of genres from studio releases to film, theatre, and commercials. His current projects include his continuing role as Executive Producer and composer for the film Baz Lurhmann’s Elvis, numerous artist collaborations on various releases, and a follow up album to his last.

Amy Dickson, Redlander 1999

Grammy nominated Amy Dickson made history by becoming the first saxophonist and the first Australian to win the 2013 MasterCard Breakthrough Artist of the Year Classic Brit Award. Amy began lessons at age 6 and made her concerto debut 10 years later. Amy continued her career with studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Royal College of Music in London and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Recognised widely for her remarkable and distinctive tone, she has performed through the world in venues such as Wigmore Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Sydney Opera House.

Anna Lunoe, Redlander 2000

Anna is recognised globally as a top DJ, having also worked as a vocalist, songwriter, producer and radio show host. Currently based in LA, Anna has toured the US, Australia and Europe, and conquered some of the globes biggest festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Hard Day of the Dead, Splash House and Electric Forest. Having recently performed back home in Australia at the Sydney Festival, Anna is continually showing herself to be a leader amongst her industry.

Sophie Cape, Class Of 1993

Sophie was an Australian champion downhill ski racer prior to having to retire from the sport following a serious fall. Continuing her sporting journey, Sophie went on to become a sprint cyclist for the Australian Institute of Sport, with the Olympics in site until a change of career direction was required following injury. In 2010 Sophie graduated from the National Art School, winning the school’s prestigious drawing prize. Following this Sophie was picked up by Olsen Irwin Gallery and continues to represent the gallery, showing her works both internationally and domestically and in 2014 Sophie was awarded the Portia Geach Memorial Award.

Jon Appleton, Redlander 1991 – Vice School Captain

While at Redlands Jon launched and edited Rippa Reading, an authors’ fan magazine and review journal, encouraged by Peter Cornish, Maureen Robinson and the staffs of the Arnold and Roseby Libraries. He was interviewed on the Today Show and other television reviews. In 1990, the magazine went beyond Redlands on subscription to other schools across Australia. He became a reviewer on TV and radio for a time and in 1991 was named a Young Achiever in the Australia Day awards. All this emerged from my correspondence and friendship with the author Robin Klein. Jon has written a book about the friendship, Robin’s books, and his work as a teenage reviewer in Australia, which of cites Redlands’ essential support and encouragement. Letters from Robin is available via pre order online and will be released by Noble Books on 8 March 2022.

Elizabeth Allen, Redlander 1995

A successful poet, Elizabeth has had her works published in many Australian literary journals and magazines. Elizabeth is the author of ‘Forgetful Hands’ (Vagabond Press, 2005) and ‘Body Language’ (Vagabond Press, 2012), which won the Anne Elder Award

Carol Chandler, Redlander 1974

Carol Chandler is an award-winning author who has been published in some of Australia’s most highly regarded literary magazines. Her short story collection, ‘Anonymous Caller’, was awarded first commended for best first book in the IP Picks Awards. Her novella, ‘Black Mountain’, was shortlisted in the Seizure Viva la Novella IV. She has received the award of Writing Fellow from the Fellowship of Australian Writers and co-edited Written in Sand, a community poetry and visual arts project. Black Mountain is a psychological thriller and is now available from independent bookstores and online. Determined to uncover the truth behind her brother’s sudden death, a young woman returns to the haunting landscape of her youth to confront the town she thought she’d left behind and the secrets they’d rather stay hidden. ‘Black Mountain is a deftly written novella – effortlessly building tension as it draws the reader in. Simultaneously delicate and visceral, this is a compelling work.’ Judges’ Citation, Shortlisted Seizure Viva la Novella IV.

Gergaynia Shelley, Redlander 1957

Gergaynia Shelley (nee Beckett) competed in the Melbourne 1956 Summer Olympics as a finalist in the 100m women’s backstroke at the age of only 15 years. She also completed in the1960 Summer Olympics in Rome in the Women’s 100 metres backstroke and Women’s 4×100 metres medley relay. The Australian relay team came second in the race. Gergaynia also competed at the 1950 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in the 110 Yard Women’s backstroke final and came second in the 440 Yard Women’s Medley Relay. Gergaynia continues to be closely connected with the school and volunteered for many years in providing valuable assistance to the Redlands Archives.

Karyn Gojnich, Redlander 1978

Karyn commenced Sailing at the age of 8, and her dedication paid off by taking her around the world and to three Olympic Games. Karyn was one of the first female sailors to represent Australia when she competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games where she placed sixth in the 470 class – the best result of the Australian Sailing team at those Games. Karyn is currently on the Committee of RSYS and is one of the Vice Presidents of the Oceania Sailing Federation.

Victoria Roberts, Redlander 1995

A superb athlete, Vicki had to choose between continuing as an Australian Netball representative for her 7th year, or to pursue her love of Rowing. The deciding factor was that Netball was not an Olympic sport, and Vicky opted to pursue her Olympic dream in Rowing. Vicki lives by the motto “Dream, Believe, Achieve’, which took her to the heights of Captain of the Women’s 8 at the Sydney Olympics.

Lachlan Mackay, Redlander 2000

Representing the Australian Schoolboys Rugby Union team whilst at Redlands, Lachlan went on to Captain the Australian U/21 team before making his debut for the Wallabies in 2005. Lachlan has since gone on to play with the NSW Waratahs and the Western Force before relocating to Europe to join French club Brive. Lachlan signed with Leeds Carnegie in 2010.

David Porecki, Redlander 2010

David Porecki is the starting hooker for the NSW Waratahs Rugby Union Team. After graduating from Redlands he played with the Manly Marlins, and then spent several seasons playing in the English Premiership with Saracens (2016) and London Irish (2016-2020). He returned to Australia and has been playing with the ‘Tahs’ since 2020.

Nick Fisher, Redlander 1998

A prominent skier, Nick first competed on the international circuit in 2001, and made his World Cup debut in December 2003 in Ruka, Finland. Nick went on to the compete in the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Freestyle Skiing where his outstanding performance saw him make the Finals

Dr Sue Morey, AM, Redlander 1959

Dr Sue Morey served as Chief Health Officer for NSW from 1988 to 1994 during a very challenging period for public health. She also helped to establish medical student training programs in rural and regional Australia where the inequalities in health care provisions were significant. In 1999, Dr Morey was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to the development and promotion of improved public health services. She continues to work as a Health Services Consultant and serves on the Council of the Medical Benevolent Association of NSW.

Chief Justice Helen Murrell

Chief Justice Helen Murrell was appointed as the first female Chief Justice of the ACT Supreme Court in 2013. Chief Justice Murrell was enrolled as a Solicitor in 1977 and called to the NSW Bar in 1981 before been appointed silk in 1995. She was appointed a NSW District Court judge in 1996 and went on to be President of the NSW Equal Opportunity Tribunal and to set up the first NSW drug court in 1998. Chief Justice Murrell has worked in criminal, administrative, environmental and equity law, and has an ongoing interest in the therapeutic jurisprudence and a strong involvement with judicial education, sitting on the Council of the National Judicial College of Australia.

Professor Diana Horvath Ao, Redlander 1961

A leader in the Healthcare Management and Research field, Diana has had an illustrious career in Healthcare Management. In 1993 Diana was made an Officer in the Order of Australia and was awarded the Sax Medal by the Australian Hospital Association. More recently, Diana was awarded a Federation Medal by the Australian Government. She was the first female Chairman of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Commissioner for the Health Insurance Commission, President of the Australian Hospital Association, a member of Trade Policy Advisory Council of Australia and a Board Member of Macquarie University.

Chief Justice Helen Murrell

Kobe Steele Oam, Redlander 1975

Kobe is the Founder and President of Orangutan Foundation International Australia. She was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to conservation and the environment in the Queen’s Birthday 2021 Honours List. Since establishing OFI Australia in 2013, Kobe has made it her mission to ensure a home for orangutans and the other endangered species who share their rainforest home, raising over $3.5 million to date to support orangutan conservation and to purchase and save critical orangutan habitat to protect what is left of the ancient rainforests of Borneo. ” I feel so very lucky and privileged to do the work I do and to receive an award for it is incredible! I am so grateful to my many orangutan friends who really did change my life, to my friend and inspiration Dr Birute Mary Galdikas for allowing me to be a part of her world, to all my beautiful friends at the OFI Orangutan Care Centre, to Dr Stephen van Mil for introducing me to Borneo and orangutans in 2008 for which I will be forever grateful, and above all to my darling daughter Kristin. My work is her legacy. I know she sent me to Borneo to help me heal and holds my hand and helps me with my work every single day.”

Janusz Hooker, Redlander 1987

Janusz has successfully juggled a corporate career with his love for Rowing, that culminated in him winning a Bronze medal as part of the Australian Quadruple Sculls at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In his corporate life, Janusz is the Chairman of the LJ Hooker Limited, and recently launched Atlas by LJ Hooker. He is passionate about Youth Education, co-founding the Foundation for Kids in New York City and the Kids to Coast program in Australia. He is the Co-Chair and Founder of Culture College, based in Arnhem Land, and provides educational programs for visiting students, teachers, professionals and executives in partnership with the Yolngu people. ‘I have learned and grown into a better person and am now able to the world with a more open mind.’ – Year 9 Student, Redlands and Culture College participant.

Catriona Rowntree, Redlander 1989

A multi-talented media figure, Getaway reporter, sort-after compere and MC, Catriona studied Journalism at Macleay College after working as a researcher with BRM, 2GB and Prime Television. Catriona’s success in television and radio, with a particular focus on the travel industry, saw her go on to publish a travel book in 2006.

Sophie Falkiner, Redlander 1992

Sophie Falkiner has one of the most recognisable faces in Australia. A television presenter well known for her work on the The Great Outdoors, Wheel of Fortune and Sydney Weekender. Most recently Sophie has been seen travelling Australia and internationally as host of Channel 7’s Sydney Weekender and Luxury Escapes TV show ‘The World’s Best Holidays’. With regular appearances across all networks, Sophie has been a guest on Sunrise, Today Tonight, Today Show, Mornings with Kerrie-Anne (as fill-in host), and Mornings (as fill-in host for Sonia Kruger). She is also a regular contributor to Sunrise, Mornings, Today Show and Today Extra.

Kathryn Robinson, Redlander 1992

Kathryn is a highly regarded journalist, television and radio presenter. Holding a Bachelors in Economics and a Masters in Journalism, Kathryn has worked as a News and Finance reporter on a number of Australian television shows including Sky News, Ten News, Ten Breakfast, Sydney Weekender and The Project. Kathryn is currently with the ABC featuring on a number of television shows including The Drum and One Plus One.

Thomas (Dominic) Bygott, Redlander 1988

Thomas (Dominic) Bygott, Class of 1988, is a statistician and mathematician working in cancer research in the UK. He graduated from the University of Sydney with First Class Honours and went on to study Computational Biology at theUniversity of Cambridge. He worked in malaria research and is now developing blood tests for the early diagnosis of cancer. Thomas and his team are currently researching clinical trials for Covid-19.

Professor Michael Johnston, Redlander 1991

Michael received his BSc and PhD from the University of New South Wales and after a postdoc at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory, joined the faculty at the University of Oxford’s Department of Physics in 2002. He is currently Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford where he leads a dynamic research group specialising on semiconductor physics, photovoltaics and terahertz photonics. He has developed methods to study the electronic properties of nanomaterials, created new high efficiency vapour-deposited solar cells and invented novel emitters, modulators and receivers of terahertz frequency radiation.  He is also a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Annalise Law, Redlander 1994

Annalise is the owner and founder of the Kanga group, an internationally leading product promotion and marketing business. In 2009 Annalise won the Telstra Businesswomen of the Year award for Business Owner category, was listed in the BRWs 100 fast starters list, and was recognised in the US Advertising Specialty Institute Awards for fastest growing distributor globally in 2010.

Ben Heraghty, Redlander 1995

A Rhodes Scholarship finalist and winner of a Fulbright Scholarship to Harvard University, Ben has used his Law degree as a platform to explore Government, public policy, and management consulting at an International level. Ben is currently the Vice President, Strategy and Planning for Brambles Asia Pacific, and on the Board of Directors for Cure our Kids.

Emma Colenbrander, Redlander 2006

Emma is the co-founder of Pollinate Energy, a social justice business established in 2012, bringing sustainable light and energy sources to marginalized communities through India. With a mission statement focused on improving the lives of Indias urban poor, Emma and her team have reached over 46,000 people through India so far, with ambitions of reaching each tier-one city in India over the coming years. Emma was a worthy recipient of the 2015 Womens Weekly “Women of the Future” recognition award for her unwavering efforts in this project. www.pollinateenergy.org
