Redlands Students Participate in the UNSW GERRIC Gifted Students Program

23 Redlands students in Year 8-10 participated in the UNSW GERRIC Gifted Students Program (10-12 January). To qualify for the program, they needed to meet specific criteria that demonstrated their high ability and potential, a pre-screening process conducted by Dr Phoebe Poon (High Potential Learning Coordinator, 7-12). From cosmology and theories of relativity to the myths about the lost city of Atlantis, from neuroscience to the practice of logic and rational thinking, our students enjoyed delving deep into university-style seminars and learning advanced content pitched at two years above grade level with like-minded peers from schools across NSW.

Dr Poon caught up with them on Day 3 of the program, and heard enthusiastic feedback like this from Year 10 student Audrey Nitschke: “A lot of ideas might have gone over my head, but I just kept engaging with it all because it was so fascinating.”

Many thanks to all the staff at UNSW GERRIC and the amazing presenters for nurturing curious minds and giving young learners an early peek into campus life and academic study beyond the school gates. Congratulations also to Redlands Social Science teacher Vyvian Kang for her work in providing behavioural and socioemotional support to students with specific learning needs at this event. Fantastic to see a Redlands staff member caring for diverse learners during the holiday period!
