Jarryd Hughes – Olympic Medallist and Australian Flag Bearer at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games Closing Ceremony – returned to his alma mater to share his experiences competing against the best snowboarders in the world in PyeongChang.

Silver Medallist Jarryd, brought home one of only two silver medals won by Australians at the Olympic Games, following his stunning performance in the Men’s Snowboard Cross.

Jarryd attended Redlands for two years, including spending one term at Redlands Winter School in Jindabyne, before moving to the NSW Institute of Sport to focus full time on his snowboarding career.

Jarryd addressed the Secondary School students at a special cocurricular assembly, speaking about his Olympic experience and providing advice to students on how to achieve their dreams. He also congratulated the members of the School’s Winter Sports Firsts teams.

Redlands Principal, Dr Peter Lennox said that the assembly recognised excellence in cocurricular activities – and in this case, both present and past students.

“It is always a wonderful occasion to celebrate students’ achievements in front of our whole School, and we are thrilled to welcome Jarryd back,” Dr Lennox said.

“Hearing from Jarryd was a memorable occasion for our community, particularly our Snowsports students, who will soon be starting their season.

“Jarryd is a great inspiration for our students, showing that with hard work, perseverance, and passion, those dreams of ‘making it to the Olympics’ can be a reality.

“At the assembly we recognised a number of cocurricular achievements from this past term, including congratulating Summer Sport ISA Champions and our talented Shakespeare Competition Winners.”

Redlands has an extensive Snowsports program, which involves around 160 students from Kindergarten through to Year 12, each year.

There is also an opportunity for Year 7-10 students to combine academic study with Snowsports training at Redlands Winter School, held in Term 3 at the School’s High Country Campus in Jindabyne.
