Redlands student Daisy Thomas proved herself no ordinary nine-year-old after hitting the slopes at the 2016 Sydney Interschools Snowsports Championships.

The Year 4 Redlands student returned from Perisher with three gold individual medals, for her exceptional performances in the Division Five Girls Alpine, Skier Cross and Moguls competitions.

She also led her team to victory, winning team Gold medals in the Division 5 Girls Skier Cross and Moguls, and a team Bronze medal in the Division 5 Girls Alpine.

“Daisy is quite the athlete, and appears to be as comfortable on skis as she is in shoes,” said Redlands Principal Dr Peter Lennox.

“She has certainly gone from strength to strength, and at the Interschools proved herself as an all-rounder on the ski slopes. To be so young and achieve so much is testament to all her hard work and training.

“Daisy has done herself and her school very proud, and has firmly established herself as ‘one-to-watch’ over the next few years.”

At the event, Redlands students finished on the podium in 59 team and individual events.  With 21 Gold, 24 Silver and 14 Bronze medals, the school placed first in both the Primary Co-ed Championships and the Secondary Co-ed Championships.

“The ski season is always an exciting time, with many of our students using the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and expertise in skiing and snowboarding,” Dr Lennox said.

“To have our students not only gain the experience but to come home with first place in both the Primary and Secondary Co-ed Championships is just wonderful.

“Redlands has a very strong record of achievement in skiing and snowboarding, and the results from Perisher show that for our Snowsports Team, the winter break was anything but a break.

“Our team worked extremely hard and faced tough competition, and across the board they performed exceptionally well.

“We’d like to congratulate each and every one of the students who competed over the weekend on their excellent results.

“They have certainly made their mark on the Interschools Ski Season, and we look forward to seeing their further achievements as they continue to compete.”

The Sydney Interschools immediately followed the 19th annual Redlands Cup where over 500 skiers and snowboarders competed on the Thredbo slope in some very testing conditions.  The Redlands team achieved 41 podium finishes, including 16 team and 25 individual.
