Learning Plus - Support
Through our Learning Plus program, Learning Support is provided for students who are finding it difficult to keep up with the pace of work, or who have been diagnosed with a specific learning difficulty which hinders their progress. Following individual testing and assessment, individual education plans are developed. Specialist staff work with small groups inside and outside timetabled lessons. In addition, individual support is provided on an as needs basis.
Learning Support is provided for Redlands students requiring additional support in Numeracy and Literacy, English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Intensive English Course (IEC).
Our learning support programs aim to:
- optimise outcomes for students with learning needs in line with the Board of NSW Syllabus
- challenge and motivate students to learn at their own rate of progress within the context of high academic standards
- increase students' self-esteem and self-confidence.
- implement and maintain a whole school approach to students with learning needs by working in conjunction with classroom teachers in programming and behaviour management.
Numeracy and Literacy Support Years K-12
We aim to provide an educational environment in which students with learning support needs can participate to their full potential with additional support from qualified staff where necessary, in order for them to meet their educational and social needs.
In the Prep School, students are provided with support on a withdrawal or in-class basis. In Junior School students are provided with learning support assistance in small groups for two periods of Maths and two periods of English per week. In Secondary School there is a mixture of in-class support and withdrawal, depending on individual needs.
This support is in addition to regular classroom lessons which, under the Redlands Learning Platform, are programmed on a differentiated basis and include course work appropriate for students with learning support needs.
EAL (English as an Additional Language) Years K-12
The EAL program offered at Redlands is based on the concept that all learners acquire English language skills relevant to the mainstream school curriculum providing them with the motivation to learn and providing a basis to interact with their peers.
For this reason, the focus of the EAL units of work is on the topics of the mainstream class, so that the EAL learners have had a chance to learn the relevant vocabulary and structures for the topic.
The EAL program is a mixture of separate classes, withdrawal and in-class support.
IEC (Intensive English Course) Years 7-10
The IEC program provides a caring environment where students are encouraged to enhance their English skills at individual level and pace. The course develops English skills in writing, reading, listening and speaking. These skills are further developed within the core subject groups of Science, Mathematics History and Geography.
The IEC groups have separate classes for most of their subjects, however integrate with the rest of their year group in Tutor time, PDHPE and Chapel.
